Stanley Pines, also known as Grunkle Stan and temporarily under the false name which in truth is his brother's name Stanford Pines, is the anti-heroic deuteragonist of Gravity Falls. He is the great-uncle of Dipper Pines and Mabel Pines as well as the owner of the Mystery Shack, a tourist trap where he tries to get as much money as he possibly can by scamming customers.
He was voiced by the series' creator Alex Hirch.
What makes him a Guile Hero?[]
- Despite being a jerk most of the time, Stan truly does care for his family, shown in episodes such as "Scary-oke" when he helps in defeating the zombies to protect Dipper and Mabel.
- He successfully manages to get people to buy stuff at the Mystery Shack despite it being an obvious scam.
- He knew that there were paranormal things in and around the town of Gravity Falls despite putting on a façade that he was oblivious to them.
- He manages to get any suspicions off of him by taking Stanford's name and acting as him, all the while secretly trying to rework the portal underneath the Mystery Shack in order to bring back the real Stanford.
- In Gideon Rises, he manages to realize that Gideon's pins were all cameras since the one he had interacted with his hearing aid, he later uses this to expose Gideon and get him arrested, inadvertently saving Dipper and Mabel and also getting his hands on Journal #2.
- Using his oblivious façade mentioned earlier, he managed to steal Journal #3 from Dipper and thus gaining all three Journals needed to rework the portal and save Stanford.
- In Not What He Seems, when he's arrested, he uses the fact that the portal temporarily decreased the gravity in Gravity Falls to his advantage and escapes imprisonment, and right after pays a taxi driver to drive away and trick the government spies into thinking he's in the car.
- At the end of Not What He Seems, he is seen begging Dipper and Mabel not to deactivate the portal in a very emotional scene, even using the word 'please' showing that he learned and changed since the episode Boss Mabel. This manages to convince Mabel into not deactivating the portal which would lead to Stan's brother as well as the author of the Journals to return back to Gravity Falls.
- At the end of Weirdmageddon, after the two brothers have a falling out that would cause everyone inside Bill Cipher's pyramid save for them as well as Dipper and Mabel to be turned into tapestries, they reconcile and reminisce about their childhood when they were as close as Dipper and Mabel are. They then form a plan to dress up as each other and trick Bill into "Ford"'s mind when in truth it's actually Stan's mind he's entering and Stan would have to sacrifice his mind as Ford would use the memory-wiping gun used by the Society of the Blind Eye to erase Stan's mind to defeat Bill Cipher once and for all. This plan ends up succeeding and the town is saved from Bill's weirdness.
- In The Book of Bill, he leaves last message for Bill from Pines family. While Ford, Dipper and Mabel, despite mocking Bill, still consider him as potential danger, Stan doesn't take him seriously at all, writing that he faced strange things in Gravity Falls enough and asking how could such powerful being being less happy than Stan himself. He finishing letter with photo of cutten dollar with Bill's face, leaving him broken.
