“ | Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody said it was a happy little tale... if somebody told you I was your average ordinary guy, not a care in the world... somebody lied. But let me assure you, this like any story worth telling, is all about a girl. That girl. The girl next door. Mary Jane Watson. The woman I've loved since before I even liked girls. I'd like to tell you that's me next to her. Aw, heck, I'd even take him. | „ |
~ Peter Parker at the beginning of the first movie. |
“ | Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man. | „ |
~ Peter Parker's ending narration of the first movie. |
“ | Not everyone is meant to make a difference, but for me, the choice to live an ordinary life is no longer an option. | „ |
~ Peter Parker to his variants. |
Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man is the titular main protagonist of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy and the tritagonist in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
He was a high school student who was bitten by a genetically altered "super" spider while on a school field trip. Endowed with the proportionate powers and abilities of a spider and following his uncle's tragic death, he intended to use his abilities for good; thus, becoming the crime-fighting superhero known to the public, Spider-Man.
He was portrayed by Tobey Maguire.
What Makes Him a Guile Hero?
Spider-Man (2002):
- Had a very nice talk with Norman Osborne in the beginning of the film. Norman himself acknowledges Peter's potential future could be bright.
- Told Harry that spiders change colors to blend with the environment as a defense mechanism. This led to Harry telling it to Mary Jane, thus starting the relationship between the latter two.
- Showed support to MJ when she was shouted at by her father.
- Defeated Dennis Caradine by twisting his arm, Dennis walked out the window. Therefore, Peter didn’t technically kill him. And even then, Dennis was about to kill Spider-Man. In No Way Home, Spider-Man admitted that the death of Dennis brought him no peace.
- Saved numerous New yorkers to the point where citizens helped Spider-Man against the Green Goblin due to Spider-Man's reputation. Among them, he stopped people mugging grocers, muggers potentially stealing diamonds, and a mugger holding a gun to a woman.
- Took photos of himself and muggers for the daily bugle. As well as stopping the crooks.
- Rescued Mary Jane, a kid and numerous other people in a parade from Green Goblin.
- Attempted to save a grandma in a flaming house, only to realize it was Green Goblin.
- Even though Goblin offered him a choice to join him, saying "Think of what we could accomplish. Think of what we could create." Peter never gain into it.
- Saved a bunch of children and Mary Jane from Green Goblin.
- Defeated Green Goblin in a fair fight.
- On Norman's request, he refused to tell Harry that his father was Green Goblin so that Harry could never know about his crimes.
Spider-Man 2:
- Initially refused to take Aunt Mary's money until she insisted.
- Saved Harry and numerous people from Octavous' fusion reactor.
- Stopped Doc-Ock from robbing a bank and killing Aunt May.
- Stopped a crime instead of going to Mary Jane's play.
- Saved a girl from a fire, despite having deactivated powers.
- In the iconic train station scene, he saved everyone on board as well as the train after his battle with Doc-Ock. After this, the citizens promised to not tell anyone about Spider-Man's real identity. While stopping the train, he got his feet smashed in and used his webs to grab onto buildings. This took a great amount of effort. And if that's standard heroism, then I don't know what to say. (Though Doc-Ock captured him later)
- Convinced Harry to not kill him. He then gets Harry to tell him the coordinates of Doc-Ock's lair.
- Reveals his identity to Doc-Ock, and convinces him to let his dream die so that the city of New York wouldn't be destroyed by the nuclear reactor. This led to him redeeming Doc-Ock and reminding him that the tentacles were affecting his mind. This led to Doc-Ock sacrificing himself to prevent the fusion reactor from destroying New York.
- Saved Mary Jane and mended their relationship. Due to Mary Jane knowing that Peter was Spider-Man, she forgave him when he did not go to her play.
Spider-Man 3:
- At the beginning of the film, Peter attends Mary Jane's play; subtly hinting that he is more competent in the film.
- Defeated Harry at the beginning of Spider-Man 3.
- After Mary Jane's play was a flop, he tried to convince her it was ok.
- Saved Gwen Stacy from an out of control crane.
- He tries to be the symbol that New York sees him as throughout the film. Case in point, him going to the festival in memorial to him and kissing Gwen Stacy to please the crowd.
- Saved two people from Sandman when he was robbing a bank.
- Tried to propose a marriage with Mary Jane in a fancy French restaurant. Though she was unhappy when Gwen showed up and Peter told MJ that Gwen was his lab partner.
- Fought Sandman and defeated him while possessed by the symbiote.
- Defeated Venom by using metal poles to create vibrations. He tried to save Eddie Brock when he jumped at the symbiote, thus he tried to kill the symbiote due to it's corrupting influence; not Eddie. Despite killing the symbiote, I think it was overall necessary due to how dangerous it was; being one of the few beings that could not be detected by his Spider-Sense.
- Forgave Sandman for killing Uncle Ben.
- He undoubtedly continued to fight crime after the film.
Spider-Man: No Way Home:
- He made a cure for Norman Osborne’s dissociative personality disorder. And it’s not standard offscreen heroism, since the cure works and thus, the effects are shown.
- Comforted the MCU Peter over the loss of his Aunt May.
- Prevented the MCU Peter from killing the same Green Goblin who blew him up. This allowed them to cure Osborne of his dissociative identity disorder becoming a better man.
Trivia
