Well, on the night I was supposed to inherit the book, five visitors came unannounced to our door. My father fought to protect us, but the gang of villains known as the Fiendish Five overpowered him and ransacked our house until they found... the Thievius Raccoonus! Our family's manual of thieving greatness fell into their filthy hands. They tore the book into five pieces and split it up, each villain disappearing to the farthest corners of the world to commit dastardly crimes.
~ Sly Cooper explaining how he lost his father and the Thievius Raccoonus.
I-It's only now that I understand the depth of the depravity of this...creature - this monster that I unwillingly helped to create. As if what he had already done wasn't enough, he found a new way to desecrate, to humiliate, to destroy. As if the suffering wasn't enough, the loss of innocence, the loss of everything to so many people. Small souls trapped in prisons of my making now set to new purpose and used in ways I never thought imaginable. He lured them all back. Back to a familiar place. Back with familiar tricks. He brought them all together. Are they still...aware? I hope not. It keeps me awake at night. I could make myself...sleep. But not yet. Not until I undo what he has done and heal this wound - a wound first inflicted on me, but then one that I let bleed out to cause all of this. He set some kind of trap. I don't know what it was, but he lead them there again.
~ Henry Emily on how his former friend William Afton killed his daughter and multiple other children.
Abandoned as a pup, he was found by Muriel, who lives in the Middle of Nowhere, with her husband, Eustace Bagge.
~ Courage's tragic past and current life.

Tragic Guile Heroes are heroes who often aren't always in full control of their emotions and actions (there are exceptions to this however). They pretty much go through a lot of tragedy and hard times. Here are some examples:

  • Guile Heroes who have problems with their family such as:
    • The ones who lost their loved ones: (e.g. Sans who lost his brother in certain routes, Bucky and Ron who lost their parents, Joebotnik McCricket whose 60 year cosmic loophole of hell resulted in Joe being automatically stripped away from worlds that 14 of Joe's lovers he bonded with separately because of a sadistic gatekeeper in the cosmos, Sasha Nein who lost his mother when he was a infant)
  • Guile Heroes who grew up or live in less than acceptable conditions:
    • Poor Guile Heroes who has no or little money.
    • Guile Heroes who grow up in a society that does awful or unwantable actions.
    • Outcasts who desire to be with and/or loved by the people around them.
  • Possessed/Brainwashed Guile Heroes who have done wrong things without their own choice. (e.g. Springtrap)
  • Remorseful Guile Heroes who have done actions in the past and later regrets it to the point where it affects their mental health. (e.g. Blossom from the original series and Okabe Rintaro who developed a guilt complex during Steins;Gate0 as he felt that he was unable to save the people that he cared for from death or the world from WWIII as he had to watch Mayuri die so many times before watching Kurisu die in front of him, which caused him to develop PTSD and severe Depression.)
  • In many cases, Guile Heroes can have a mixture of the circumstances above. (e.g. Courage who lost his parents and was repeatedly abused by his owner, Eustace Bagge, Henry Emily who lost his daughter and shows remorse for some of his actions, Megamind who grows up in a society that does awful or unwantable actions and he shows so much remorse for his past actions to the point it affects his mental health, and Sly Cooper who lost his father to the fiendish five and ended up losing the Thievious Racoonus while ending up in a orphanage.)
